Rock Hunting

Collecting reflections of the eternal Rock

It can be fun to search for different types of rocks
and minerals the Lord
Jesus Christ has created.
Plan a trip as a family.
All creation reflects the
divine qualities of our great Creator. Rocks are no exception. As you collect rocks and minerals,
consider how strong and beautiful our Lord is!

Consider bringing several pieces of equipment on your rock hunting expedition. A backpack is handy for carrying your supplies, including food and water, as well as the rocks you collect. Wrap each rock specimen in newspaper before storing it in your backpack. A geologist's hammer can be used to break apart rocks and obtain minerals. ALWAYS wear plastic safety goggles to protect your eyes from dangerous rock chips when hammering! Consider gloves to protect your hands. Take along a small notebook and pen to record the locations where rocks were found. A magnifying glass will help you see fine mineral crystals in rocks.
Safety is essential while outdoors. When hiking, make sure an adult is along. Be aware of the weather forecast. Dress appropriately and protect yourself from the sun or cold. And remember, wear safety goggles when breaking rocks apart.
There are many places to look for rocks: your backyard, the beach, along a stream or creek, in open fields, in the desert, on hills, and in the mountains. Before rock hunting, though, make sure you have permission if the land is private. Also some state and federal lands, such as the National Parks, forbid taking rocks. Make sure you have permission so you don't end up stealing!
Once home, try identifying the rocks you've collected. Are they igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic rocks? How hard are they? Do they react with vinegar? Are they magnetic? What kind of luster do your rocks have? Label each rock you've identified. You might want to construct a wooden box with separate small compartments to organize your smaller rocks and minerals. An egg carton is also a good alternative. You can display larger rocks on sturdy shelves. Share your collection with a friend and tell them of the greatness of our Creator!
